"A 'cresting wave' dominates your view of the ocean and you wait for the roar as it smashes into rolling foam."
Artist comment: "The crest of a large wave is one of my favorite scenes to paint. It is a magnificent sight. I have made that my specialty in oil. Here I depict all the stages of a breaker nearing the sandy beach of the Northwest coast of Washington State. After selecting an appropriately sized canvas, I did an initial sketch with a neutral grey. To balance the major wave, I added a foreground swell with foam patterns. Grey is the frequently dominant color in this painting. The sunlight is bright but filtered by a morning high, thin, cloud cover. I sketched the scene, then began painting from the sky on down. I used a zig-zag stroke on the open water to indicate ripples. After the foam patterns were completed, I painted the frothy splashes and put in all the highlights."
