"The offshore rocks and the ever moving sea meet on the coastline in an 'eternal conflict'."
Artist comment: "For many years, I have observed and painted the offshore rocks I see on the coasts of Washington and Oregon and totally enjoyed the process, but never thought much about the aesthetic interaction of rocks and sea. One day it occured to me that there is a conflict here! The rocks would appear to be a solid unyeilding barrier, yet eventually they are worn down by the constant slam of salt water (How do you think sand gets here?), so, I sketched a large rock formation. There is a large swell becoming a breaker on the left. As it smashes into the rock, spray lofts high into the air and riverulets of water spill over the rock. The process repeats as it has for millenium, and will go on for many more! I sketched the composition with oil on stretched canvas. Beginning with the blues, I painted sky and foam. Then I painted the major wave and spillover, and the dark green water. I used a palette knife for the rock formation. Then I did the runoff and finally the highlights."
